It’s impossible not to be moved by the museum, which celebrates a once vibrant multi-ethnic area that was destroyed during apartheid in the 1960s and 1970s, its 60,000 inhabitants. was forcibly removed. Inside the former Methodist Mission Church, the interiors of the house are recreated, along with photographs, recordings and testimonials, all of which create an evocative picture of a fractured but not entirely fractured community.

The display includes a map of District Six labeled by former residents where their demolished houses and their neighborhood features, reconstructions of house interiors, and faded photographs and recordings. Many of the staff, virtually all of the homeless residents, have heartbreaking stories to tell.
The museum’s annex, the Homecoming Center, is open occasionally for temporary exhibits and events.
